A Guide to Chess Improvement The Best of Novice Nook edition by Dan Heisman Humor Entertainment eBooks

I started playing about 30 years ago, when I was in high school, but never really advanced. Suffice to say the reason is because Dan Heisman's writing did not exist. I was rated 1040, knew only the simplest tactics and was reading advanced strategy books. After not advancing I fell away from the game.

Well fast forward 30 years and I decided to take the game back up. I found myself making tons of mistakes like hanging pieces, spending minutes thinking of advanced strategy while missing simple pins, poorly managing my clock and being surprised by my opponents combinations (even when they were obvious when I later reviewed my game).

But this time, things are different. Fortunately, I found a copy of this book and went to work!

The author was able to explain why I was making mistakes (and I feel like I was making everyone in the book!) and what I could do to improve. It has made a tremendous difference in my chess. Just asking what is the best move? Is this move safe? and working on logically approaching each move according to the guidelines in the second chapter has been invaluable. Further, his teaching about time management has helped immensely.

While I still make some 'rookie' mistakes I feel like I have the blueprint and guide forward that I was missing 30 years ago. As a result not only do I now occasionally win but I know why I loose.

But above all? I enjoy chess and feel like I can improve.

This is not a book I read and put on the shelf but a book I reference frequently. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

A Guide to Chess Improvement The Best of Novice Nook edition by Dan Heisman Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews

I expected much more. It is somehow full of repetition. Interesting points he mentions but just that. A little bit of confusion with references to past articles (which you can download from the website making a 25 USD donation).
I believe this is one of the best books on improving your thought process, if you still blunder pieces in games.
Dan's Novice Nook column on Chess Cafe is probably the best resource for adults trying to get better at chess. This book includes a concise collection of an overwhelming amount of material NM Heisman has generated. If you are an adult and you want to get better at chess, this is the place to start. Get ready for some tough love...
First skim of edition was pleasantly surprising. Great chess advice and clear readable diagrams on both Galaxy Note and laptop screens. All for less than half the price of the print edition. An earlier review of the edition (sample) was extremely critical. I found the sample had both a sufficient amount of text and a clear diagram. If there was a problem before, it appears to have been remediated.

I agree with most of the other reviewers on the high quiality of Heisman's columns. I like the fact that the edition has links to Heisman's original Novice Nook Columns at ChessCafe.com, though they are blocked if one doesn't have a log in for ChessCafe.
Anything by Dan Heisman is excellent and worth reading + rereading. He, John Nunn and Jeremy Sillman are my favorite chess writers.
Including the part where you realize that Treebeard is right you've been hasty, very hasty...

Dan Heisman's focus is on removing misconceptions and bad habits. The amount of positive chess information is small. He has only a few points he wants to make and plenty of space to make them in, so he beats them into the ground.

Some of these points will not apply to you. Your circumstances are different, or you already know that. Therefore whole chapters are tedious. The lecturing on how to have a useful relationship with a chess coach, prices, travel, reasonable expectations and so on goes on and on.

The chapters on time management (in other words "do not be hasty") went on and on...

And then I realized that he was right, and that these bits of advice were relevant to me (even though I resisted that idea at first), and that I needed to go through all this patiently as many times as it took for the advice to sink in. (Not just on time management either.)

I've been through the book once, and I'm starting again.

I don't know if this will affect my rating at all. But I can point to several moves in my games that were different from and better than what they would have been if I had not been bearing in mind some advice from A Guide to Chess Improvement, and at other points I dug into alternative lines of play that I would not have considered before, but nothing came of it.

That's pretty good. I've read much more prestigious chess books that had no useful effect on my play or my chess thinking.
I stumbled across Heisman's articles back in the day and it became very obvious that the quality and clarity of the articles are amazing. There are many strong chess players but there are very few strong chess players that can teach well. Heisman exemplifies this. I am a self taught 1700 player I relied mostly on solving tactics puzzles and reading the occasional article or book or video. This book helps confirm a lot of the theories I had on self improvement and adds upon it. If you are a self taught player and feel that you have gaps in your knowledge this book won't teach you per se but will guide you in the right direction. There is an immense amount of chess media out there and this book will help you navigate it. Also it goes over some topics that chess books normally don't cover like psychology and traits. I would even go as far as to say that this book is incredibly necessary (in it will save a lot of time) if you want to improve in chess.
