"The characters that inhabit this sharp and witty novel are troubled, impoverished, confused, lost, sexually frustrated, and intellectually unfulfilled. So...basically everyone I know."
-Mike Barker, Co-Creator and Head Writer, American Dad!
"...saucy writing yet tender and heart-felt characters...bridges an unusual but empowering sisterhood between girls-next-door and girls-on-stripper-poles. It's about time!

Twenty-five-year-old Tamina is a sharp-witted Jersey girl living in Hollywood with a near-phobic response to mismatching colors, an addiction to pedicures, and a hectic job teaching comprehensive sex education to urban youth. Suffering the consequences of a violent assault, Tam looks for relief in romance and LA's underground erotic entertainment scene. However, when Tam's young attacker unexpectedly resurfaces among a crowd of drag queens, porn stars, and musicians, Tam finally must make real choices. Fear or confrontation. Cynicism or curiosity. Silence or honesty. It would be surreal, if it wasn't LA.

A Crack in Everything Vanessa Carlisle 9781450243926 Books Reviews
I ended up reading this book in only a few hours, and was so caught up in reading that I found myself missing Tamina in between my readings! A Crack in Everything is a novel that has everything I want to find in a novel with a huge plus Tamina is a fighter! What she reflects on throughout her work and personal life make us think about how we too can let a crack open into our selves. Us too can stand up for what's right, for better honest sex, for vulnerability. And, most importantly, the words chosen are those of a practiced writer precise and flowing. Recommended for enlightenment!
A Crack in Everything introduces us to Tamina, a sex education counselor with unconventional addictions and a phobia to mismatching colors.
While Tamina is very effective as a sexually transmitted infections adviser to teenagers, her personal affairs are a mess. It was her dream to leave New Jersey, but one soon gets the feeling that Los Angeles might not be the right place for her either. And while one can't help but laugh along with some of Tamina's exploits (she becomes a foot model, a job that allows her to continue to feed her pedicure addiction), it's impossible not to feel compassion for her roommate problems, poverty issues and near break-down episodes.
The story does end on a hopeful note, with Tamina leaving town and deciding, finally, to leave the past where it belongs.

Vanessa Carlisle might be a first time novelist but she's hardly a first time writer and there's evidence of that all over A Crack in Everything. Dialogue is fluid, moving, funny and sad sometimes simultaneously. Very quickly we're on a ride we cannot get off and wouldn't want to if we could. Always smart, frequently sexy and with a distinctive will to inform, maybe even change a few lives, this is something I'm very glad to have read. I'd like to call it a bildungsroman, and maybe it is one for our time one where our coming of age is denied to us in a hometown suburb in New Jersey (or anywhere else, really), where we've got to run off to LA, get into some trouble, shake everything up and come out confident and sexy enough to run rampant in the world. That's like a lot of us, really, all adrift into our 20's because we never really had to grow up, then suddenly up against a wall knowing it's either go home or become great, which in this case also means teaching kids failed by a society and system a lot they need to know about sex, something sadly barely talked about in popular literature. Get in, get on! Enjoy the ride.
Easy read, this is deep, incredibly entertaining. Peeling off insecurity and self judgments in a frank manner. Love this story!
"A Crack in Everything" gives us an opportunity to see human nature and fallibility in a beautiful light. Vanessa Carlisle skillfully creates a character you want to get to know and will instantly love! As Tamina maneuvers through her life both professional and personal we get the chance to see a woman discovering herself. Both understanding and developing a sensitivity for her own person as she displays compassion and support to all of the people she touches through her work and life. This story is engaging, funny, thoughtful, and an excellent foray into the novel world for Ms. Carlisle. 5 stars, two thumbs way up and she has earned a fan for life!
"A Crack in Everything" combines inner-world anxieties we all face with outer-world conflicts we know are inevitable, and do our best to avoid. Tamina, the lead character, heroically ventures into both worlds. Vanessa Carlisle has created a sharp, sensitive, engaging character who courageously tackles her own 'stuff' while navigating the rough waters of teen sex, the porn industry, broken relationships, and self-discovery. The author engages our souls as Tamina questions, doubts, struggles, and finds herself. Redemption for Tamina comes as it does for us, the reader, by seeing the light that shines through 'the cracks in everything'.
